Basic Balustrade Regulations for Safe Installation

When it comes to having glass balustrades installed, safety glass should be used as standard, and you should not accept anything different.

We are going to look at some areas you should be aware of when it comes to glass regulations for balustrade installation:

Safety Glass

Laminated Glass: Laminated glass is made from a minimum of two glass panels with an interlayer. You will regularly see the interlayer made of plastic or resin-based materials. It’s possible for laminated glass to be made from two float panels, two toughened panels or a combination of those mentioned. This can be discussed with us here at ANY Weld before any decisions are made. 

Toughened Glass: Tempered glass is formed from glass being subjected to heating at temperatures of around 700ºC, which is then quenched – a term for cooling the glass quickly.

Quenching is only conducted for around one minute but creates a strong layer on the front and back side, instantaneously locking tension inside the glass. This makes it up to four times stronger against impacts than regular float glass.

It is referred to as safety glass because, if shattered, it will not smash and break into big pieces, preventing those dangerous shards occurring. Instead, thousands of smalls pieces form if the impact is big enough, which is far less hazardous.

Safe Glass Balustrade Heights

Before any balustrades can be fitted, they are subject to a set of minimum height requirements, as follows:

·      Railings and balustrades for indoors, in a domestic property, can have a minimum height of 0.9m from the point that is stood on to the handrail.

·      Balconies being fitted outside a home are required to have a height of 1.1 m from fixing point to the top of the handrail.

Loading Pressure Guidelines

Glass balustrades not only add an aesthetic appeal, but they also prevent people from falling through, resisting both impacts and significant loads.

As far as pressure guidelines are concerned, three load requirements must be met, as follows:

1.  Vertical loading on the handrail

2.  Horizontal loading on the handrail

3.  Loading on the infill

Clearly, with a heavy load or pressure leaning against the various components, the balustrade will ‘give’ a little, but this ‘deflection’ must not exceed 25mm.
